Your RV is a significant investment — both in terms of money and the fun you expect from it. That is why it is important to find the right kind of RV storage and RV protection. The right RV storage solution can protect your investment and improve the quality of your experience when using an RV.

RV Protection: Shield the RV’s exterior

Between the atmosphere and the harmful UV rays, the elements can exterior of your RV will likely show signs of aging pretty quickly. You might not even notice these effects at first because they’ll likely be concentrated on the roof. There, the paint will start to fade. The sun will also make the vinyl or rubber on the outside of your RV break down and crack. Hail and pounding rain can also mar the exterior surface of your RV. Shielding it from these environmental effects under a ShelterCoat or ShelterTech custom building will not only help your RV retain its good looks but also extend the lifespan of its exterior features.

RV Storage and Protection Benefit: Protect the RV’s interior

It’s logical to expect that an RV carport and custom garages can protect the exterior of your RV. But did you know that it can also help improve its interior? Much like the effects that can occur if you leave your car outside for long periods of time, the sun’s grueling rays can also fade the materials inside your RV. From the seats and dashboard to the living area, the excessive heat and light can deteriorate the condition of these materials. In addition, the heat can increase the energy needed to get the interior to a comfortable temperature when you are gearing up to travel and stocking up on supplies.

Protect Your RV Because It’s More Convenient

RV covers can also provide some protection but have several significant disadvantages as well. Even with more than one person helping, covering and removing the cover from your RV is a major inconvenience. Over time, as the fabric brushes constantly over your RV, the finish will become dull. When using a cover both the RV and the cover itself must be completely clean and dry. Otherwise, the grit on either could scratch your RV’s paint. Moisture can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. Rather than investing in a cover for your RV that might cause damage to the surface of your motorhome, consider a custom building. Unlike covers, custom buildings are made to your exact specifications. They offer protection from wind and keep the cover off the surface of your RV. In the end, a custom building is a better solution for RV storage and RV protection.

Tip: Custom build a ShelterTech or ShelterCoat building to the exact measurement specifications you need in order to store your RV. Aim to configure your building over 12 ft. high in order to store your RV. Don’t forget to measure your RV before purchasing!

  • I agree with your comments on RV protection. I live in Elko Nevada, I would like one for my 40′ toyhauler that has three slide outs. (mine is an Envy 2011 but all are about the same size). What do you recommend?

    • Hi Robert,
      Thanks for the comment.
Based on your size requirements, it looks like you’ll be in the market for a premium ShelterTech building. These buildings are great because they come with a wind and snow load rating and our considered some of our highest quality shelters. They are made to order in the U.S. and are customizable, so you can be sure you’ll be getting the size you want and need.

Before we can give you a quote, we will need to know what shape building you are interested in: peak, barn or round shaped. Here’s a link to the ShelterTech page: http://www.shelterlogic.com/shop/garages/sp-series

We took your measurements for your RV and we built you a building right on the page: http://www.shelterlogic.com/shop/garages/sp-series/sheltertech-sp-series-round. We chose the round building because it will give you a lot of usable space at the top, and it doesn’t narrow into a point like the peak size building does. We thought that in order to comfortably drive in and out of your shelter with your 34’L x 12 ‘H x 11’W RV, you would need something along the lines of 40′ L x 14’H x 16’ W. The quote for a ShelterTech at these measurements is $7420.17. We also gave you the strongest cover – the Ultra Duty 21.5 oz. cover. If you wanted to go with a 14.5 oz Heavy Duty cover $6,563.09.

You can configure your own building here: http://www.shelterlogic.com/shop/garages/sp-series
Start by choosing a shape, then choosing your measurements, and lastly choose your cover grade and cover color.

Thanks and let us know if you have any additional questions!

  • My name is Jim Paldino and I’m the facility director here at the DATTCO bus co. I’m looking for a structure or two to cover our executive coach buses. I’m also in need of a structure to cover screened topsoil. Large enough to back up a triaxle dump truck and dump. They are all 25′ to 30′ wide by 60′ long.

    • Hi James,
Thanks for the comment! Although you can’t build a shelter to the heigh requirement you are looking for (you need something just a few feet taller than what we have available), it is possible for you to get the tallest custom building size and install it on a raised structure. You can contact our customer service department and they will be able to assist you in purchasing a building and instructing you on how to make it work for you.
      Their number is 1-800-560-8383.
Thank you and please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have.

  • Really it such an informative post. I’ve read so many amazing things about your article! you have written on the important issue. I used a cover the first winter my rig was in storage. Once I removed it to prep for travel, I found lots of mildew on the top. The manufacturer;s claim of breathability didn’t quite measure up to reality. After that, I started storing it in a shady area with no cover. It got dirty, but no mildew or mold. A good wash and it was good as new.

  • Looking for a replacement shelter for my RV and tow rig
60’L X 14’H X 12’W. I think that my present ShelterLogic has seen better days it’s time to replace it.

    • Thanks for reaching out, Roger!
Are you looking to replace just your cover or your entire structure?
If you are in need of a new frame may we suggest our Sheltertech series. With this model you will definitely be able to configure a building with a door opening high enough to cover your RV and you will also benefit from a live load rated building with upgraded materials.

  • I agree with you that long exposure to the sunlight can fade the materials inside my RV, from the dashboard to the living area, not to mention deteriorate the conditions of these materials. I have been telling this to my husband, but he just won’t listen to me. Now I can just present this article to him and hope he finally changes his mind and agrees to get the RV stored. Thank you so much.

  • Celestia Stratheimer

What grabbed my attention was how you said that having a storage unit will ensure that the RV was protected from harsh elements, like the UV rays of the sun, that can damage its exteriors. I know that this information will also grab the attention of my sister because she was the one who bought the RV. I’m sure she wouldn’t want her precious investment to be destroyed so easily, it would break her heart. It might be a great idea to ask her to get the RV stored when it’s not in need. Thank you for sharing.

  • My husband and I recently bought an RV for family vacations and I had no idea that RV protection is important so I am glad that I found this article. I like that you say you need to shield the exterior of your RV from harmful UV rays that will typically concentrate on the roof. Also, the fact that the sun rays on the RV can also increase the energy needed to get the interior to a cooler temperature is very important because you can save a lot of money by using an RV cover.

    • That is correct! We are glad to see that you found this article informative and beneficial. We now offer Arrow Carports which are also a viable option for covering your RV and protecting your home away from home.

  • We have a 13 ft high (a/cs included) and 38 ft long 5th wheel that we want to protect. But, we live in Conifer ,Co. which is in the foothills….hence heavy snow. Will one of your structures be appropriate for us? Also we have a packed dirt drive that we will put it on. If your structure needs concrete anchors, we will do those.
    Appreciate your info,
    Denise Haberman

I am considering a storage unit for a 5th wheel camper.. It will be stored in Holland VT which can get frigid during the winter. I will utilize the camper only during the months of June thru October.. Do you recommend a prefab steel motor home shelter or a wooden garage or something similar.
